Overview

AICAR (5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide riboside; also acadesine or AICA riboside) is a cell-permeable nucleoside analogue used in cellular metabolism and energetics research.   • Ischaemia and renal injury — studies report attenuation of ischemia-reperfusion-induced kidney injury via the AMPK–TXNIP–NLRP3 pathway (Gan et al., 2026).
  • Cardioprotection — research examines purine-nucleotide precursors, including AICAR, in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion models (Musial et al., 2025).
  • Neurobehavioural models — work links hippocampal AMPK activation to changes in depression-like behaviour (Takahashi et al., 2026).
