GHK-Cu (copper tripeptide-1) is a naturally occurring copper-binding tripeptide, glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine bound to copper(II), and one of the most studied copper peptides in regenerative and dermatological research. Isolated from human plasma nearly half a century ago, GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring copper-binding tripeptide (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine complexed with copper(II)) that has become one of the most studied small peptides in skin-regeneration and copper-homeostasis research. Its characteristic blue-green colour is the visual signature of the copper ion held within the histidine-lysine coordination site.

A signalling molecule discovered in human blood. The parent tripeptide was first identified in 1977, when researchers traced a growth-modulating activity in human serum to a single small molecule, glycyl-histidyl-lysine (Schlesinger et al., 1977). Early work showed it could influence the behaviour of cultured cells (Barra et al., 1987), and decades of subsequent investigation reframed GHK-Cu as a copper-delivery peptide that interacts with a broad set of cellular pathways (Pickart et al., 2015).

What the research explores. Rather than acting on one isolated target, GHK-Cu has been examined across several overlapping themes in experimental models:

  • Skin-matrix and regenerative signalling — investigated for its effects on remodelling-related gene expression and tissue repair pathways (Pickart et al., 2018).
  • Topical anti-ageing and wrinkle research — studied as a candidate cosmetic-science peptide and for the challenges of measuring its skin permeation (Mortazavi et al., 2025; Ogórek et al., 2025).
  • Inflammation and longevity models — explored in zebrafish inflammation assays and aged-mouse paradigms (Hu et al., 2026; Mazzola et al., 2026).
